Coastal Dream by Sandy Dooley |
The inspiration for this piece is Sandy Dooley, who is a 21st century impressionist artist. Dooley's works are inspiring to me because of the way that she uses light and color in her pieces. She uses a variety of colors and techniques in her works, but she primarily uses bright and vibrant colors. Dooley's work has a very childlike and bright feel to it, which I found inspiring because of what I wanted this piece to be about. This piece is inspired by childhood and imagination. Often, I think that people believe that those are things that will disappear when you grow up. On the contrary, I believe that as you grow up, those things stay with you, and that is what this piece is about.

To begin planning this piece, I knew that I wanted to create a landscape with many bright and vibrant colors that were used in my inspiration pieces. The theme that I wanted to present in this piece is about how the world is a unique and beautiful place because of the way that we differ in the way we see things. To do this I knew that I wanted to create a piece that used a wide variety of bright colors. Sometimes when this is used in art, it takes away from the overall realness of the piece, making the piece appear to be more abstract and interpretive than a depiction of reality. I did not want my piece to end up looking like that. Rather I wanted it to appear more like my inspiration, as more of a vibrant colorful version of reality, rather than an altered depiction of reality altogether. To do this, I wanted to use more enhanced colors that are already seen in most of the objects I depicted. This is a more vibrant sky, with pinks and oranges mixed in, or similarly a blue tree, or purple mountains. I also wanted to depict flowers in this piece, although I was unsure what color.

To begin the process of creating this piece, I cut the paper I was using to the size that I desired. This was slightly smaller than the original piece came in, so I measured and cut the paper to the size that I desired. After I was satisfied with that, I taped the paper to the table that I would be working on. After other projects that I have completed I learned that this method works well for me. It is helpful because it allows me to move the piece, and let it dry completely. It also allows me to have clean edges, which I believe adds to the overall aesthetic of the piece. After I finished that, I sketched out where I wanted each element of the piece to go on the paper. I did this loosely, because I did not want many pencil markings on the paper after I was finished with the piece completely. I also tried to write lighter with the pencil.

SimilaritiesThere are numerous similarities between my piece and the work that I was inspired by. The most apparent of this is the use of color. Dooley uses very bright and vibrant colors. I wanted to use this idea in my piece as well. The particular similar colors are the blue/ green hues in the plants. This is similar to the colors that I used in the evergreen trees in the front of the piece. The way the flowers frame the landscape also parallels the way the evergreen trees frame the landscape in my piece.

DifferencesThe differences between these pieces include the medium. Dooley uses acrylic paint, while I use water color. This creates a different effect because of the consistency and vibrancy of the paints. The technique differs as well. I use a more controlled technique compared to that of my inspiration. Overall this does create a different affect, then if I were to use a more loose/ impressionist technique like my inspiration.
